Description

The ‘Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation’ after the completion of a training colloquium with rapporteurs the school psychologists Derek Wilson and Colin Newton, assumed the training and supervision of primary school teachers to implement the program Peer Mediation in some schools of Attica. The Peer Mediation program has been approved in its entirety by the Ministry of Education. The scientific design and supervision of the program was carried out by the Foundation’s psychologists-collaborators who support the implementation of the program and cooperate with teachers that are responsible for its application in each school. The peer mediation program is based on the idea of students’ education so that they function as school mentors (counselors) and mediators in order to resolve conflicts between other students.
The implementation includes three steps: a. Selecting students – mediators through applications and interviews (up to 18 students), b. Training (6 hours) and c. Weekly supervision during the conduct of the program at school (anonymous discussion of incidents).

Aims of the Program

  • To train students in the art of active listening, communication, problem solving and crisis management.
  • Give students the opportunity to create meaningful solidarity with their peers.
  • To develop and boost self-confidence and interpersonal skills of the students as well as their ability to work effectively in teams.
  • To encourage students to play active and responsible role in contributing to the quality of school life.
  • To use the power of peer mediators to find solutions in in-school problems.

Program effectiveness

  • It causes changes in student behavior, which has a positive impact on the quality of relationships within the school community.
  • Creates an ethical standard of responsible and sensitized individuals, with students openly condemning the phenomenon of bullying.
  • There is a decrease in bullying incidents.
  • It provides an additional support network in the fight against bullying within the school community.
  • Students develop their communication skills.
  • New relationships are built on trust.
